About
One of the masters of Japanese calligraphy, Juin was initiated into Esoteric Buddhism and spent two years studying in Kyoto with a Confucian scholar before starting his studies of Zen Buddhism. He went on to establish his own school of Buddhism, the Ritsu sect, eventually retiring to a mountain retreat where he spent the last three decades of his life. There he executed a vast number of calligraphies and gained respect as one of Japan's most revered Buddhists. These five characters, written in Juin's characteristic bold, blocky style, are the first line of a couplet from the Lotus Sutra which, roughly paraphrased, declares that all things exist in the Absolute.
