  • About

    Yamamoto Baiitsu was literati painter who had studied Chinese painting styles and techniques of the Ming and Qing dynasties. When the four seasons appear in a screen painting, it usually represents the passing of time.

    In these screens, time moves from the daphne and wild orchid of spring at the right through to the peony and lotus of summer. The composition bypasses winter but features autumn flowers, including chrysanthemum and bush clover, followed by the sacred bamboo and daffodils of early spring.
