  • About

Rees visited Central Australia with his wife in 1976, where he made a number of drawings and watercolours at various times of the day. He described his impression of Uluru (Ayers Rock):

"... the great Rock that is revealed at sunset is an amazing sight. It is very red, but it is also very simple. You hardly see any form at all, it is sort of flat. But I found out that if you go before the sunset and get to the side of the Rock, you see an amazing amount of natural sculpture. The rock in general terms looks so simple, but get the side rays ... and nature's bas-relief of the Rock is the most thrilling part of it. So 'The great Rock - dusk' ... was my reaction to this sculptural quality."
