  • About

'The lower half of the Buddhist image is an example of fine craftsmanship with which the blockcutter has interpreted the original brushstrokes to depict different textures such as the monkey's fine fur, the guardian's coarse hair, the smooth and firm feathers of the birds, the flowing garments, the guardians' bulging muscles and so on. The prints made from woodblocks such as this would probably have provided inexpensive alternatives to painted scrolls for the worshippers to take home to adorn their family shrines.'
