'Ghost town' was inspired by the forrays of Russell Drysdale and Donald Friend to the abandoned gold mining towns of Hill End and Sofala in the 1940s, and in 1955 Whiteley made his own journey there, making studies of the rambling ruins and deserted streetscapes.
