Raymond Arnold was born in Melbourne and studied Teaching at Melbourne State College 1969-72, painting and art theory at RMIT in 1976, painting and printmaking 1977-78 and postgraduate printmaking with Geoff La Gerche 1981 at the Caulfield Institute, Melbourne. He has lived and worked in Tasmania since 1983. He was appointed Lecturer in Printmaking at the School of Art, University of Tasmania, where he taught until 1986; he also joined the Chameleon Artists' Co-op and set up a printmaking studio in 1983; he began working there full-time in 1986, producing prints and designing and making posters. He returned to teaching at the University of Tasmania School of Art in 1992.

'Transcend the dripping rock beyond the fall I-IV' was printed by the artist at the Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne. Arnold began work on the series in January 1989, and re-worked the plate over the next twelve months. The series represents four states of one plate. It was originally commissioned for the Tasmanian Government's 'Art for public buildings scheme', for exhibition at the Launceston General Hospital. Arnold's work is often concerned with environmental issues; this series deals with something becoming form, structure emerging from the unknown, chaos becoming order.
