This watercolour was made in 1931 when the artist was living with his family at La Seyne-Sur-Mer in Var, near Toulon in the south of France. The property where the family lived had a small vineyard, house and studio where the Hawkins' remained until August 1933, when they left for Tahiti, sensing the forthcoming political turmoil in Europe. Hawkins was eventually to settle permanently in Australia, where he arrived via New Zealand, in 1935.

Hawkins found the same climate and way of life in Australia that he had valued so highly in Europe, and which had attracted him to this part of France. The strong light and scrubby foliage of the landscape are the strongest features of this watercolour.
