About
'Bologna frost' belongs to the body of textile-based works known as ‘Hoarfrosts’ that Robert Rauschenberg made in his studio on Captiva Island, Florida. He composed them with found scraps of paper and cardboard, using solvents to transfer the images and text to fabric.
‘Hoarfrost’, a word borrowed from Dante Alighieri’s epic poem The divine comedy, refers to the formation of minute ice needles on surfaces like blades of grass. Similar to the glistening patterns of ice crystals, Rauschenberg’s 'Hoarfrosts' feature shimmering, nebulous images on translucent fabrics. Following the artist’s installation instructions, the unstretched textiles are pinned to the wall at the upper edge, allowing draped folds of fabric to gently undulate with currents of air.
