'Comment on painting' in running script on one side of the fan was painted by Shang Yanliu (1875-1963) in 1941. A native of Panyu (present day Guangzhou), Shang earned the coveted 'jinshi' degree in 1904, earning third place, and became a member of the Hanlin Academy. He later served in the Republican government as an adviser to the President, and was regarded as a master in modern Chinese calligraphic history.

The landscape on the other side of the fan was painted by Huang Junbi (1899-1991) and dated 1942. Huang, a native of Nanhai, Guangdong province, was regarded as one of the great masters in the history of modern Chinese ink painting. He served as professor in the art department of the National Central University in 1940s. He relocated to Taiwan in 1949 and served as a professor in the Art Department of the National Taiwan Normal University.'
