'Nostalgia for the sky' 1942 was completed whilst Nolan was enlisted in the Australian army and posted to the Wimmera district - a period that is scarcely represented in the collection. This work arose directly from this experience and his feelings about the war. Reflecting influences from Picasso and Tucker, it is among a number of 'pathological' heads and portraits Nolan made c1942 that are important precursors to his 'Self portrait' and 'Colonial head' paintings, as well as oil on paper portrait heads.
