  • About

This poster acknowledges and celebrates Australian indigenous women working in the traditional practices of basketry, weaving, beading, netting and shell work. The exhibition catalogue features illustrations of pandanus mats and string figures, explaining the symbolism of specific forms and representations of tjukurrpa.

The poster 'Aboriginaland. Land rights, not mining' features a combination of text, a photograph of a young woman from Yirrkala, hand-drawn bottlebrush motifs, and a reproduction of Marie McMahon's own cotton d’oyley. Worked in filet crochet and adorned with beads, McMahon wrote of her creation, 'I designed this piece as an alternative view of white Australia, showing who it really belongs to'. The gridlike lace features a map of Australia, gum leaves, emus and emu tracks.
