  • About

This painting was created using a mechanical process that aimed to eliminate the subjective decision-making of the artist. In a celebration of the mundane, the title of the work and its means of creation were inspired by the back of a breakfast cereal packet. Rooney created a stencil from a shape printed on the packaging, which he then applied to the canvas in a repeated pattern. The colours were chance selections from house-paint colour charts.

Rooney’s work was included in 'The field' exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1968. Although his work employs the visual vocabulary of colour-field painting, it is in fact closer in intent to pop and conceptual art.
