    This drawing, like many from the 1980s on, precedes the painting by a number of years.

    '... what happens is that when I draw, I usually set aside two or three months and do nothing but drawing ... Subsequently I might go back over those drawings, amend them, add collage or something, but they mightn't finally get painted for two or three years after. But when I'm in the painting mode I just get straight through painting and don't really stop to draw, except in little sketchbooks', James Gleeson 27 August 2002.
