About
Fred Williams was born in Richmond, Victoria and studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne and George Bell School from 1944-49. In 1951 he moved to London where he studied at the Chelsea Art School (1951-55). He began making etchings in 1954 while a student at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1954-56). These were figurative, often of performers in the music halls, inspired by Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942). The majority were made from drawings made on the spot, some of which were also developed as paintings. He returned to Australia in 1957 and turned to landscape for his subject matter in painting and etching. The plate for 'Dancer' is extant. The Gallery has 20 etchings by Williams.
