About
A native of Jieyang in Guangdong, China, Chen Wenxi (Chen Wen Hsi) studied at both the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and the Xinhua Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Travelling widely between Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Xingning and his home town during the 1930s and 1940s, Chen, then an art teacher, painted primarily in ink. His work is imbued with a strong descriptive power and sentimental feeling. Chen Wenxi moved to Singapore in 1947. He has studied and practised Western oil painting since then. He felt that he was more at home with Western modernist trends after the Post-impressionists. This painting is a good example of his unique synthesis of expressive painting style and calligraphic principle. It is painted in the 'xieyi' style using spontaneous, free brushwork.
