ZHANG Zhiwan was from Nanpi, Zhili (present day Hebei Province). He was considered a successful official who became Grand Secretary (Jan 1889-Oct 1896). He received his provincial degree in 1840 and in 1847 he passed the ‘jinshi’ with highest honours (Zhuangyuan), thus being seen in favourable light by the royal family. He became a tutor in the School of Princes and was awarded the title of the grand guardian of the heir apparent. Other titles included vice-president of the Ministry of Rites, Governor of Henan and Jiangsu Provinces, President of the Ministry of War and Ministry of Justice. He was known for his landscape painting, following the 16th century Wu School. His 2 sons also became famous painters: Zhang Jiayin and Zhang Ruiyin. He was the brother of ZHANG Zhidong.
