  • About

Frank Hinder studied in Sydney before moving to the USA for nine years to further his training, most significantly with Emil Bisttram at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts and later at his summer school at Taos, New Mexico. When Hinder returned to Sydney in 1935, he had absorbed a broad knowledge of European and American abstraction, becoming a key Australian mid century abstractionist.

Hinder was one of the founding members of the Contemporary Art Society in Sydney in 1939 and like his peers Margel Hinder, Ralph Balson and Grace Crowley, had a strong interest in cubist and constructivist principles, theories of dynamic symmetry, and philosophies of theosophy and anthroposophy. The Gallery has a substantial collection of Hinder's prints, drawings and watercolours.
