In the modern history of Chinese painting many artists have attempted experiments to break through conventional boundaries and to create an antidote to the almost overbearing canonical tradition of literati painting. Zhang Daqian, for example, established a new area with his splashed-ink-and-colour creations. Cai Heng's works move even further in the direction of expressionism and abstraction, but retain all the beauty and tranquillity of familiar Chinese brushwork shown in landscape painting. Cai thus gives traditional Chinese brush painting a fresh new twist.
