About
During the Australian recession of the early 1990s, a number of younger artists in Sydney and Melbourne pursued an intentionally unpolished style of art. To describe their apathetic and crude DIY aesthetic, artist and curator Jeff Gibson coined the term 'grunge'. The grunge artists incorporated kitsch, mass-produced objects and inexpensive junk from inner-city and suburban neighbourhoods into their artworks, extending on precedents set by the Annandale Imitation Realists and Popists. Their objective was, in part, to challenge formal conventions of art making, display and interpretation.
'Inbetween dis-play' and 'Home dis-play' are archetypical grunge works. Each hand painted cabinet exhibits an assortment of items that reference identity and personal history, modern art, everyday life, and popular culture. Their assembly was inspired by cabinets of curiosities but also the clutter of shop fronts and home furnishings.
