  • About

Cristina Asquith Baker studied painting in Melbourne in the 1880s and 90s before travelling to London and Paris in search of further training, first in 1902-05 and again in 1914. She exhibited paintings and lithographs in 1914 at Miss Nicholl’s studio, which was reported in The British-Australasian publication.
It is thought Asquith Baker learned lithography in London with Ernest Jackson, the founder of the Senefelder Club, established in 1909 to promote lithography as a medium for artists, and an important association for Australians working in Britain. She was one of a select number of Australian artists to make lithographs in this period (along with contemporaries such as Arthur Streeton and Thea Proctor), their work stemming from their British experience and influences, and who subsequently exhibited them in Australia as an innovative ‘new’ medium for art.
