This cloth from an artist's sketchbook depicts the Mahasiddha or 'great mystics'. On this side is Maitrichen, in standing yogic posture, and on the other side is Draken seated in a Chinese-style landscape. The sure and confident linework suggests the hand of an accomplished draftsperson although traces of underdrawing and the artist's study of detail can be seen. While it has been suggested that these sketches formed part of an artist's pattern book, this set also has the quality of a practice pad or study drawings, especially in the rendering of the deer accompanying the dynamic figure of Maitrichen.
