ORLAN’s work explores different techniques such as photography, video, sculpture, drawing, installation, performance, biotechnology, etc. She was the first artist to use surgery as an artistic medium. ORLAN has had retrospectives in France, Italy, Estonia and Spain and has been represented in Biennales in Turkey, Poland, Russia, Australia and South Korea, as well as numerous French biennales and, notably, the Venice Biennale in Italy five times.
‘One Orlan body of books’ symbolises the work and time spent by Orlan as artist in residence at the Getty Center, Los Angeles in 2006/07 in addition to the work done by the other guest scholars at the Center at that time. Each book which appears behind Orlan’s body was offered by each resident scholar.
