The Study Room

The Study Room provides the public with access to view works on paper from the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ collection of prints, drawings, photography and watercolours which are currently not on display. The room is available to all interested members of the public and offers an environment for a close-up viewing of works which might rarely be seen in the main gallery space. Visitors are given the opportunity to both broaden their understanding of the scope of the gallery’s permanent collection as well as their appreciation for the varieties of art itself.

The Prints, Drawings and Photography collections consists of over 16,000 works from the Australian, European, Asian and Photography departments and is representative of a diversity of artists, styles and important works, both historical and contemporary, in these areas. Works range from the early European master prints of Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn to Australian prints and drawings including works by Margaret Preston, William Dobell, Dorrit Black, Grace Crowley, Lloyd Rees and Arthur Boyd, Japanese Ukiyo-e print masters Okumura Masanobu, Andô/utagawa Hiroshige and Utagawa Kunisada. The Photography collection also has notable works by both Australian and international photographers such as Max Dupain, David Moore, Olive Cotton, Tracey Moffat, Brassai, El Lissitzky and Cindy Sherman. The names listed are by no means exhaustive or indicative of the collections as a whole, and the public are encouraged to browse through the catalogues kept in the Study Room of works held in the collection to gain more of an understanding of what is on offer for viewing.

To ensure that the room is free for your visit and to allow time to prepare works for viewing, bookings are preferred for both individual and group visits. Tutors are also encouraged to use the room for their relevant classes, however there is a limit of twelve people in the room at one time.

For further enquires and bookings please contact the Study Room Coordinator, Matt Cox, on (02) 9225 1758 or e-mail mattc@ag.nsw.gov.au.
