A creative medium synonymous with modernity, photography appeared in many Asian countries at the same time that it appeared in the West. It was similarly used both for documentary and artistic purposes, providing a rich cultural resource.
The strength of the Gallery’s Asian photography collection is contemporary Japanese photography. Yasumasa Morimura, one of Japan’s most influential artists, is represented as is Hiroshi Sugimoto, Yanagi Miwa and Kon Michiko. The first Indian photographs to enter the collection are by the contemporary Indian artist Pushpamala N, and there are also works by contemporary Australian-Asian artists including Simryn Gill. Another dimension is added by the work of Australian artists such as Max Pam and his remarkable portfolio of images created from his travels through Asia.
