Tom Bass sculpture workshop

CANCELLED

Enter the creative space of a working sculpture studio

The course starts with an introductory talk at the Art Gallery of NSW. Then, taking inspiration from works in the Gallery’s collection, you will create a decorative relief wall sculpture over four Sundays at the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School in Erskineville.

Sculptor and teacher Wendy Black will guide you through the techniques and processes to create your work in clay. You will make a waste mould, cast it in plaster, and colour-finish it to take home.

Friday 1 March
Members lounge, lower level 3, Art Gallery of NSW
11am – 1pm (lunch NOT provided)
Meet Wendy Black, who will provide you with an overview of where, what and how to start and take you through the traditional methods of making sculpture. Selected references from the Gallery collection will be provided for you to create your sculpture.

Sunday 3 March
Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, Erskineville
10.30am – 3.30pm (lunch provided)
Begin the process of modelling in clay, working from your chosen reference. You’ll be shown how to use the tools to turn your visual reference into a 3D form.

Sunday 10 March
Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, Erskineville
10.30am – 3.30pm (lunch provided)
Each week you’ll be working towards a finished work, but for now there is more modelling of clay and developing form.

Sunday 17 March
Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, Erskineville
10.30am – 3.30pm (lunch provided)
After final modelling touches to complete your clay sculpture, you’ll be lead through the traditional process of making a one-piece plaster waste mould. You’ll then prepare the mould for casting your sculpture in plaster.

Sunday 24 March
Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, Erskineville
10.30am – 3.30pm (lunch provided)
This week you’ll complete the casting process using sisal to reinforce your sculpture. Once set, you’ll be guided through the chipping out of your sculpture. You’ll then make any necessary repairs to your plaster for the final colouring.
