Sunday concert series: Sol LeWitt
Free performances by students and staff of the Australian Institute of Music
Join students and staff from the Australian Institute of Music in a special series of performances inspired by the work of Sol LeWitt. Enjoy works by contemporary and Baroque composers, many of which LeWitt listened to while he worked and were in his own music collection.
LeWitt was influenced by music and his process has been compared to that of a composer. Not unlike a musical score, which is subject to subtle variations in each new performance, his concept-based instructions embrace interpretation and chance in the materialisation of the work. LeWitt also had a comprehensive music collection consisting of 3970 individual cassette tapes of work by early Baroque composers as well as American minimalists Philip Glass and John Cage. He also held within his collection 26 scores written by contemporary composers, including Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Cage, Roland Dahinden, Alvin Lucier, and Walter Hekster.
