Shanghai nights bar

Chinese New Year special

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. To celebrate, the Art Gallery of NSW will be staying up late and presenting a night of contemporary Chinese music, food and performance.

The evening, hosted by FBI DJ Chris Coucouvinis, will feature a cocktail of sophisticated Chinese-influenced beats, blending Chinese classical and contemporary music with hip hop, electronica and rare grooves, while an eclectic mix of Chinese performers take to the stage.

The evening’s performances will kick off at 7pm with Jo June, a professional magician and comedian. Also featured in the program are:

  • a Mongolian puppet dance and a fan dance by members of the Chinese Dance School of Sydney
  • martial arts and weaponry demonstrations by Andy Minh Trieu and the Dai Hong Martial Arts Academy
  • a special guest appearance by the Chinese Wonderman, who will perform amazing feats of physical and mental strength by standing on chicken eggs, swallowing a metal ball and chopping vegetables on his belly!

Catch sight of the God of Fortune roving the Gallery to bring you good luck for the Year of the Rabbit and enjoy the flavours of modern China with a signature cocktail and contemporary Chinese menu.
