Concert series

Now in its 14th year, the Art Gallery Society of NSW’s Resonate concert series returns in 2014 with another stellar line-up of talent.

Before each concert you can sample the Art Gallery of NSW’s diverse program of exhibitions, followed by music of great beauty and power.

The Gallery Cabaret will present the cream of Australia’s cabaret performers, Tyran Parke and the wonderfully versatile talent of Fiona Campbell.

The piano and massed voices feature in this Resonate series with favourites Alexey Yemtsov and Alexander Boyd displaying their virtuosic pianism and the uplifting emotional power of the Song Company and the Sydney Philharmonia Choir.

Resonate is always proud to introduce audiences to new performers and we are pleased to have Anthony Romaniuk on fortepiano performing with Joanna Huszcza on violin.

Ticket holders must comply with the security arrangements for the event and venue. All students must present a valid full-time student ID when presenting tickets. Exhibitions subject to change.

Cancellations:
Three full working days (Mon–Fri) notice is required to qualify for a refund. All refunds attract an administration charge of 25% of the ticket price(s) with a minimum charge of $5. With subscription tickets there are no refunds for single sessions, unless a session is cancelled. Not negotiable.

Alexey Yemtsov: Russian fireworks

Sensational young Ukrainian-born pianist Alexey Yemtsov returns to Resonate after performing at the Society’s 60th-anniversary gala dinner in 2013. His extraordinary virtuosity will be in full display in this program Russian fireworks with music by the great Russians Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Prokofiev.

The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and private viewing of ARTEXPRESS 2014. Doors open at 7pm. Seating commences at 7.45pm.

Tyran Parke: Children and art

One of Australia’s most celebrated, award-winning cabaret performers, Tyran Parke has created an evening of song specially crafted to the beautiful setting of the Gallery. Children and art will be a humorous and touching evening of cabaret exploring these two themes and the desire to leave a legacy, through the music of contemporary writers – Broadway’s Kander and Ebb, Stephen Schwartz, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim. In addition Tyran will premiere Compositions. Taking inspiration from his award-winning brother Trent Parke’s acclaimed photography, Tyran approached many of the world’s best cabaret composers and invited them to choose an image and write a song especially for him to sing. The results are a unique melding of song and art which finds a home most fittingly in Children and art.

The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and private viewing of Afghanistan: hidden treasures from the National Museum, Kabul. Doors open at 7pm. Seating commences at 7.45pm.

 

Friday 2 May 2014 7pm – 10pm

Alexander Boyd: Evocations of Spain

Yet another talent from Australia’s illustrious Boyd dynasty, Alexander Boyd returns to Resonate to showcase his virtuosi piano skills. The program begins with Mozart’s Sonata in A minor, followed by a Chopin Scherzo and two Nocturnes and concludes with Isaac Albéniz’s Iberia Book I & II, a masterpiece of musical impressionism that brilliantly evokes the sounds and flavour of his native Spain.

The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and private viewing of Afghanistan: hidden treasures from the National Museum, Kabul. Doors open at 7pm. Seating commences at 7.45pm.

The Song Company: Music divine

As a special treat the magnificent Song Company celebrates its 30th anniversary with four centuries of early vocal music in our Gallery. This Resonate concert features five madrigals of Monteverdi, three French ditties and five English madrigals interspersed with some of the greatest medieval songs, from the famous Carmina Burana codex to the Spanish Cantiga collection. Renowned for their extraordinary range of repertoire and style, the Song Company will enthrall you with cappella magic.

The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and private viewing of Theatre of dreams, theatre of play: nō and kyōgen in Japan. Doors open at 7pm. Seating commences at 7.45pm.

Anthony Romaniuk & Joanna Huszcza: The first piano

The fortepiano was the precursor of the modern grand piano and Resonate is pleased to introduce a wonderful exponent of this historically important instrument, Anthony Romaniuk. Joining Anthony will be violinist Joanna Huszcza. Together they will perform a beautiful concert of music by Bach, his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Franz Benda and the Violin Sonata in C by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and private viewing of Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2014. Doors open at 7pm. Seating commences at 7.45pm.

Sydney Philharmonia: Musical portraits and harmonious landscapes

The singers of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs will take you on a musical tour through a gallery of music. Starting with the music of the Renaissance, imagine an art gallery of vocal music including old masters, the Romantics, Impressionists, minimalism, contemporary and Australian. It will be a feast for your ears and soul. Expect the unexpected – from Bach to the Beatles. This is choral singing at its very best, conducted by one of Australia’s foremost conductors Brett Weymark.

The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and private viewing of European prints and drawings 1500-1900. Doors open at 7pm. Seating commences at 7.45pm.

Omega Ensemble: Eight parts Schubert

The Omega Ensemble is one of Sydney’s finest instrumental groups, celebrated for their innovative programming and exquisite musicianship. Once again they present a program of thoughtful contrasts with Prokofiev’s bittersweet Overture on Hebrew themes and Schubert’s famous Octet in F Major, one of this composer’s best-loved compositions.

The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and private viewing of European prints and drawings 1500-1900. Doors open at 7pm. Seating commences at 7.45pm.

Fiona Campbell: More of Fifi L'amour!

‘Diva extraordinaire’ Fiona Campbell presents a stunning collection of explosive, seductive and romantic cabaret songs in the Gallery Cabaret format. Be prepared to be surprised and delighted as the girl with the golden voice croons her way through classics from Porter to Piaf alongside exquisitely re-imagined songs from the world of pop. Those who were present at Fiona’s Saints and sinners recital in 2012 will remember her sensational cabaret selection. This year Resonate has asked for an entire cabaret show and so we present her More of Fifi L’amour! to coincide with the Pop to popism exhibition.

The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and private viewing of Pop to popism. Doors open at 7pm. Seating commences at 7.45pm.
