Dutch still-life oil painting course with Celia Gullett

In this four-session workshop, students will learn to emulate the techniques of the Dutch still life masters.

Based on a painting by Laurens Craen in the Gallery collection, participants will gain an understanding of the effects produced by transparent and opaque layering. Fruit, metal and drapery will be also studied, in order to better appreciate the extraordinary and versatile brushwork of this much admired period in painting.

Beginning with a coloured ground and gradually building the painting, students will gain important technical skills and knowledge about traditional oil painting methods.

It is envisaged that participants will be able to incorporate this technique into their own work, whether figurative or abstract.

Suitable for students with reasonable drawing skills and some experience in oil painting. Not suitable for beginners.
