Artist talk: Wanyubi Marika
Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2013
Join senior Rirratjingu artist Wanyubi Marika for a talk about the extraordinary bark paintings from Yirrkala. These works were commissioned in 1959 by Dr Stuart Scougall and Tony Tuckson, then deputy director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Today, they form the foundation of the Gallery’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art collection.
Wanyubi will reflect on the significant legacy of artists from the Marika family who, along with other Yolngu artists, were instrumental in 1963 in creating the historic Bark Petition, an assertion of their land rights which combined a written statement and signatures with clan designs to protest a proposed mine in their country.
