A winner by design

I always thought it was pretty special and now it’s got a certificate to prove it. Our children’s book My Australian art has won a national museum design award.

The book was announced a winner in the Children’s Book category in the Museums Australia Publication and Multimedia Design Awards 2014 with high praise from the judging panel:

Outstanding direction in kids’ book design in contrast to many other publications. Solid, robust production techniques, fit for use by children. Educational and non-patronising design with great use of colour. Reflective of the collection with creative elements for children.

My Australian art belongs to the My art series, which also features the titles My world art and My Asian art. Designed by the Gallery’s new media design manager, Jo Hein, the series was written by the Gallery’s senior coordinator of education programs, Victoria Collings, with development consultation from the Gallery Shop’s book buyer, Cassandra Willis.

Imaginative and inclusive design was a key requirement for My art, so the series was user-tested by the keen kids of Castle Cove Public School and St Thomas More Primary in Toowoomba. The students came up with some inspired interpretations of the activities and artworks presented in the books. You can view a few of these great test pages in the slideshow below – just click on one of the small images to begin.
