Tertiary Newsletter August 2009As you settle in to a second semester of study, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is planning exhibitions and events that will entice you away from the desk and into the Gallery, whether for study or diversion. Also remember that our website is a valuable resource for tertiary study and research. It includes a searchable database of works in our permanent collection, information on how to use our study room and research library, information on our internship program and listings of all of our exhibitions, lectures, forums and other events. Exhibition and events highlightsThe display of magnificent Silk Ikats of Central Asia continues throughout August and September – don’t miss the talks by textile designers and experts. The recently opened Printmaking in the Age of Romanticism exhibition offers insight into the fantastic, emotionally-charged world of the Romantic prints of the 19th century. Expert and celebrity talks will address everything from changing printmaking techniques to the visionary, dreamlike subject-matter of artists such as Blake, Turner, Delacroix and Goya. In September, a weekend of events celebrates the Grand Courts – home to our collection of pre-20th century Australian and European works – which is undergoing some surprising changes, including the installation of a selection of Australian sculpture and key Aboriginal works. For more information, download the program brochure (PDF, 536 KB) or visit the website closer to the time. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Christo’s wrapping of Little Bay, the Gallery presents Kaldor Public Art Projects: 40 years, documenting the landmark international contemporary art projects brought to Australia by John Kaldor. See the website for details of events, including exhibition talks and films. Wednesday nights over the coming months also feature talks on various exhibitions, including: The Field, six works from the collection that reflect the dominance of colour-form painting in Australia in the latter half of the 1960s, our new Yiribana exhibition The Dreamers, and new contemporary displays Photography + Place, et.al. maintenance of social solidarity and Nicolas Mangan: Between a rock and a hard place.
