Tertiary Update - Art Gallery of NSW

European 19th century court

Tertiary Newsletter August 2009

As you settle in to a second semester of study, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is planning exhibitions and events that will entice you away from the desk and into the Gallery, whether for study or diversion.

Also remember that our website is a valuable resource for tertiary study and research. It includes a searchable database of works in our permanent collection, information on how to use our study room and research library, information on our internship program and listings of all of our exhibitions, lectures, forums and other events.

Exhibition and events highlights

The display of magnificent Silk Ikats of Central Asia continues throughout August and September – don’t miss the talks by textile designers and experts.

The recently opened Printmaking in the Age of Romanticism exhibition offers insight into the fantastic, emotionally-charged world of the Romantic prints of the 19th century. Expert and celebrity talks will address everything from changing printmaking techniques to the visionary, dreamlike subject-matter of artists such as Blake, Turner, Delacroix and Goya.

In September, a weekend of events celebrates the Grand Courts – home to our collection of pre-20th century Australian and European works – which is undergoing some surprising changes, including the installation of a selection of Australian sculpture and key Aboriginal works. For more information, download the program brochure (PDF, 536 KB) or visit the website closer to the time.

Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Christo’s wrapping of Little Bay, the Gallery presents Kaldor Public Art Projects: 40 years, documenting the landmark international contemporary art projects brought to Australia by John Kaldor. See the website for details of events, including exhibition talks and films.

Wednesday nights over the coming months also feature talks on various exhibitions, including: The Field, six works from the collection that reflect the dominance of colour-form painting in Australia in the latter half of the 1960s, our new Yiribana exhibition The Dreamers, and new contemporary displays Photography + Place, et.al. maintenance of social solidarity and Nicolas Mangan: Between a rock and a hard place. See the website for a full listing of coming talks and other events.

Ursula Prunster

Ursula Prunster (1950 – 2009)
BA (Hons) MA Univ. Sydney; Senior Coordinator of Public Programs, Curator of Special Projects AGNSW

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of one of the Gallery’s most well-known and beloved former staff members, Ursula Prunster.

Since joining the Gallery in 1979, Ursula brought her infectious enthusiasm for art to various curatorial, educational, and public programs roles. She curated exhibitions at the Gallery including The Legendary Lindsays, Orientalism (Australian component), Seeing Cézanne and Belle-Île. She lectured in Renaissance and Baroque art at the University of Sydney and organised the Art Gallery Society annual art appreciation lecture series and Diploma courses and regularly lectured on a wide range of topics.

One of a kind, Ursula was a brilliant communicator with a unique sense of style. A voracious reader with a hunger for knowledge, her lectures were full of fascinating detail in the Domain Theatre, attracting a devoted following. Students, lecturers, colleagues and art lovers will miss the exuberance and rigour she brought to the Gallery.
