SIDNEY NOLAN A NEW RETROSPECTIVE 
UNTIL 3 FEBRUARY 2008

The Gallery's major summer exhibition reveals the genius of Sidney Nolan - one of Australia's greatest painters and our first internationally acclaimed artist.

A comprehensive audio guide narrated by John Doyle (aka Roy Slavin) is available and a video on the artist runs within the exhibition.

Upcoming Art After Hours events include Celebrity Talks with guests Wendy Whiteley, David Marr and Moffatt Oxenbould, and live poetry and music performances in the exhibition space.

School holiday performances bring to life the Australian legends and heros that inspired Nolan, including Ned Kelly.

Westerns: Outlaws and Outsiders in association with Sidney Nolan
Like Nolan’s paintings, Western films often depict the discordance of the land, people, history and mythology. This series of outstanding Westerns continues with these highlights in the upcoming weeks: A fistful of dollars (Dir: Sergio Leone 1964), A professional gun (Dir: Sergio Corbucci 1968) For a few dollars more (Dir: Sergio Leone 1965), and The Missouri breaks (Dir: Arthur Penn 1976).

Indigenous Connections - Nolan's set and costume designs

In conjunction with the Sidney Nolan exhibition, this display includes photographs of the Royal Ballet's Rite of Spring rehearsals featuring Nolan's set and costume designs, along with images of Arnhem Land that inspired him and a spectacular re-creation of Nolan's Moonboy backcloth.

Yasumasa Morimura: Seasons of Passion / A Requiem: Mishima

In his 2006 series Morimura recreates memorable postwar incidents as reported through press photography. In this DVD work, Morimura/Mishima delivers an impassioned speech, one based on the writer’s pre-suicide diatribe from 1970.
