Descartes, Ren (1596-1650)

ARCHITECTS OF THE FRENCH ENLIGHTENMENT

This mind blowing lecture explores the foundations of French Enlightenment philosophy. René Descartes attempted to find a place for faith and freedom in a mechanical, scientific world. He proposed that the body is a machine which can be studied according to the principles of physics. The soul, however, is unitary and free. The existence of the soul is summed up in Descartes’ famous saying: ‘Cogito ergo sum’ – ‘I am thinking therefore I exist’.

In the age of Newton, Descartes’ philosophy was promoted by Fontenelle, the first of the Philosophes – a witty, cynical, sceptical man who had a total disregard for the human condition. Ticket price includes lecture notes, coffee during intermissions and a glass of wine after each lecture.

CALLOT AND BELLANGE: PRINTMAKERS AT THE COURT OF LORRAINE

Jacques Callot (1592-1635), was one of the great artists of seventeenth century Europe and the one most responsible for turning the technique of etching into an artform. Born and raised in Lorraine, he travelled to Italy as a young man to be trained under the great masters of the time (1).

Jacques Bellange (c. 1575 - 1616) was an artist and printmaker from Lorraine, now in France, whose etchings and some drawings are his only securely identified works today. They are among the most striking Mannerist old master prints. His known artistic activity dates only from 1602 to 1616 and he is now familiar chiefly for his etchings and drawings, all his decorative works and most of his paintings having perished (2).

Peter Raissis takes you on a journey through the Court of Lorraine through the artwork of Jacques Callot and Jacques Bellange. Peter is the curator of European prints, drawings, and watercolours at the Art Gallery of NSW.
