Through Let Them Eat Cake I sought to recreate the ‘sensations’ of food via the tactile and viscous nature of paint. I wanted to explore the artificiality of mass produced food and western fixations with perfection through the cakes uniformity. My inspiration arose from the conventions of still life drawing on the works of artists Thiebauld, Oldenburg and Cézanne. I began by taking digital photographs, exploring the artificial nature of cakes but finally progressed to painting using my digital work as stimulus. I hope audiences respond to my work with both desire and a morbid fascination for their mild vulgarity.
