I wanted to explore human nature and how each of us aims for perfection. I appropriated a mathematical equation to explain self esteem, consisting of three separate elements. The three elements of my equation are self esteem, expectation and success. These elements combine to give each of us our image of ourselves. In making this body of work I was inspired by Jasper Johns and his use of typography. I used a modernist style and a combination of acrylic paint, oil pastel and shellac varnish to achieve the quality of surface and complex colour relationships I see so often in Johns’ work.
