The following pages list the winners of the art prizes awarded by the Art Gallery -- artists and the titles of their works.


Archibald Prize

Awarded to the best portrait, "preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by any artist in Australasia".
First awarded 1921.

 

Wynne Prize

Awarded for "the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of figure sculpture by Australian artists".
First awarded 1897.

 


Sir John Sulman Prize

Awarded for "the best subject/genre painting and/or murals/mural project".
First awarded 1936.

 

Photographic Portrait Prize

The Photographic Portrait Prize (2003-06) promoted contemporary portrait photography and excellence in all forms of still photo-based art. It is now held at, and managed by the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.

 


Trustees' Watercolour Prize

First awarded 1961.

 

Dobell Prize for Drawing

First awarded 1993. (Acquisitive)

 


Packing Room Prize

An adjunct to the Archibald Prize.
First awarded in 1991.

 

People's Choice

An adjunct to the Archibald Prize.
