The Friends of Conservation Committee | A dedicated group of people who raise funds for the Gallery's Conservation Department, the Friends of Conservation facilitate the department to employ the expertise which allows major projects happen and well as allowing some expensive equipment to be purchased. Recent projects the Friends have supported are the mounting and binding of a thousand William Dobell drawings and three hundred James Gleeson drawings, and the preservation of 19 Lloyd Rees sketch books; treatment of George Baldessin's fragile Pears (Final pear version); the restoration of Vive l'Empereur! by Edouard Detaille, and the acquisition of an infra-red spectrometer to complement the Department's technical examination facility. Ray Wilson, Chairman of the Friends of Conservation, says: "The Friends of Conservation have raised over $500 000 since their group was established a few years ago. The Friends wish to assist the Gallery in its efforts to present its collection in the best possible light, and to help the Conservation Department obtain the most up-to-date equipment. "The Friends are rightly proud of their achievements. We are also grateful to the supporters of our fund-raising functions and especially to the members of the Gallery Foundation who are directing their annual tax-deductible contributions to the Conservation Department. The active support of the Friends' efforts by the staff in the Conservation Department is fully acknowledged and is an integral part of our success. "We organise four or five events each year that include visits to private collections, lectures, and guided tours of exhibitions, and we are happy to welcome anyone wishing to attend these functions. Please contact Stewart Laidler (stewartl@ag.nsw.gov.au or 02 9225 1666) if you would like to be added to our mailing list, or call me on (02) 9363 4633 if you would like more information about the Foundation."
