Elioth Gruner Prize

Applications close 1 April 2024, 5pm

In 2024, the final year of the Elioth Gruner Prize, the Art Gallery of New South Wales will be awarding a total of $31,000 to an eligible art student demonstrating excellence in the study of a landscape painting in oils.

Applicants must be an art student who is currently residing in New South Wales and has been for at least five years before entering the prize.

  • Eligibility

    The prize is open to fine arts or visual arts students who are currently enrolled in an accredited studio-based diploma or degree, or a graduate who completed their studies in 2023. Applicants will be required to provide a transcript or proof of enrolment from their educational institution.

    Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident who has lived in New South Wales for at least five years before entering the prize.

  • The works

    Applicants must submit images of TWO artworks. These works:

    • Must be landscape paintings in oils

    • Must be created between January 2023 and April 2024

    • Must NOT exceed the size limit of 100 x 150 cm (either landscape or portrait orientation).

  • How to apply

    Complete the online application form by 5pm, Monday 1 April 2024.

    Applicants must include the following as part of their application:

    • Proof of enrolment from your educational institution

    • Artist CV

    • A PowerPoint file with your two nominated artworks

    How to set up the PowerPoint file:

    • The first slide in the file should have only your name.

    • A JPEG image of each of your two works should appear on the next two slides. The images must be formatted on a white background with caption underneath. Captions must include title, date, medium and size.

    • Save your presentation in the following format: SURNAME_Firstname_2024

    • A PowerPoint template is available (see below)

    Shortlisted applicants will be required to deliver their original paintings to the Art Gallery for final judging. They are required to deliver and collect the work at their own cost.

  • Selection process

    • The winner will be notified in May 2024.

    • The scholarship is judged by Art Gallery staff.

    • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
